The Race Results
The inaugural Awesome Grand Prix saw some vicious racing across all categories on what was described as an "exciting and unsuspectingly challenging course". The course was a hot favourite with the riders, offering up fast cornering and some steady climbs on the 2nd half of each lap providing plenty of need for a well-played strategy. With temperatures poking into the 30's and each race start reaching over 450m in elevation the riders had their work cut out for them.
With some power moves and team strategy in play, we saw some big power moves and breakaways and some gutsy efforts to bring them back, the Red Truck beer garden rallied on the fence all day.
In the Women's Elite field saw Joanie Caron from Fluevog's Crit Nasty take the win and the $1,000 prize money. However, as Caron is not a resident of BC and not Eligible to win the Provincial title Holly Simonson was crowned the 2018 Elite Women's Provincial Champion with Haley Gill taking 2nd place and Michelle Schaeffer rounding out the podium.
The $1,000 cash prizing from AGP's primary sponsor Glacier Media was a big draw to stack the Men's Elite field drawing German rider Florenze Knauer fresh off several wins at BC Superweek. Florenze was the horse to watch from the gun. 5 riders made a break and were able to bring this around to lap the field resulting in a separated sprint finish for clean results. In the break was Knauer from Hermann Radteam, Ryan Aitcheson from Pender Racing p/b Bicicletta, Alexander Murison from Trek Red Truck Racing p/b Mosiac Homes and Nigel Kinney from Langlois Brown Racing. After lapping the field the breakaway had a short moment to regather themselves before the pack sprinted for 5th place leaving the breakaway to battle out 4 more laps for a clean sprint finish. Knauer taking the top step and the $1,000 cash prizing, Murison taking second but with Knauer not eligible for the Provincial title Murison is the 2018 BC Criterium Champion. Aitcheson taking 3rd.
